NEWS FLASH: FDA Warning covers most drugs used for arthritis pain relief

The FDA has issued a warning about ALL non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
These are the commonly used pain relievers for arthritis and so this is of special interest to arthritis sufferers. Both prescription and non prescription drugs are covered by this warning, including Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and many other common drugs.

Side effects of these drugs may include ulcers and bleeding in the stomach and intestines.  This may occur WITHOUT WARNING and may cause DEATH.

It is important to take these pain relieving drugs only when needed and to use the lowest dosage that works for you.  Whatever you do, you must be sure to stay within the safe dosage level - read the label and talk to your doctor.  Using these drugs for a long time increases the risk, and taking too high a dose can be toxic (poisonous).

NEVER take any drug shortly before or after any surgery or medical procedure without checking with your doctor.  NSAID drugs create special risks if you use them shortly before or after coronary bypass surgery.

Factors that increase the odds of bleeding include:

  • Using NSAID drugs for a longer time or higher dosage
  • Cortocosteriod drugs
  • Anticoagulant ("blood thinning") drugs
  • Smoking
  • Consuming alcohol (beer, wine, liquor, etc.)
  • Other health problems
  • Increased age
